Cynthia says:

Since learning about An Gorta Mor and writing my book, I visit schools and teach children about this time in history, but also encourage them to understand that hunger exists today. And I give them ways to participate in alleviating hunger in the world.

I was reminded again today through the Oxfam magazine that hunger still exists. One in six people worldwide suffer from chronic hunger. As we know, oftentimes it isn't the lack of food, but who has the political power and access to food. We watch the news and read newspapers that contain overwhelming stories of sorrow and tragedy and it becomes too much to know, but I've also been hearing stories of triumph and healing, too. I came across a web site devoted to joyful news and picked up a free newspaper in Ithaca, NY called, 'Positive News.' I want to be a part of the healing process.

I closed the Oxfam magazine and made a note to read it later, but as I was making something to eat I was thinking about how I often have to keep myself from eating too much and there's so many people in the world who can't get enough to eat. I was thinking about how basic eating is and how no one in this world should be without good food. I picked up the Oxfam magazine again and decided to respond to the 'Act Fast' movement. Oh, I could write a small check and send it, but why not do something more? I am reminded each time we come together to dance that we have been given a gift from our Irish heritage, or if we're not Irish, from the Irish people. This gift is a reminder that love triumphs. Why not use this gift to raise some money for a hunger movement and for a local crisis center? Why not do it with dancing?

Come to dance, celebrate life and friendship, bring canned goods and non-perishables for Emmaus House in Haverhill, a check for $10.00 to Oxfam, and an appetizer to share.

Although this social network website was started by Boston set dancers, it is open to everyone. Set dancers are known to travel great distances for special set dancing events. It's also nice to know about dancing available in other locations as we travel for our other purposes.

If you have a group and want to post information about it, this social networking website is a handy tool to get the word out.
